Clutter

This week my partner, Karen, cleared our bedroom floor of shit.

Not real shit (obviously!). Just the clutter that you leave on the bedroom floor. The half emptied suitcase from the last trip. The jeans that I will wear again, but not today. A bag of clothes for the charity shop. Bits left over from the last round of Ikea furniture assembly. A pile of books. A box of paper for shredding. Just the normal, everyday bedroom crap!

I didn’t realise my bedroom was so big!

Yesterday I settled a long running dispute that has been taking up a lot of headspace over the past year. Not something hugely important, but something that had grown arms and legs and gotten way more overblown than it ought to have done.

A week ago I was in a room with 71 other people discussing how a “cognitive declutter” (writing down all of the things that are taking up space in your head) can help free up space for ideas and creativity.

Just as physical clutter can stop us using our space to its full potential, it’s equally true that the things that we mentally ruminate on can stifle our ability to see things clearly.

And it’s invigorating when we clear the crap away!

Of course, this won’t last forever. There will be the inevitable creep of stuff to take up the space. Nature abhors a vacuum. And yesterdays underwear loves it’s own corner!
