The woman behind the counter of the supermarket rang the bell at exactly 11am this morning. I didn’t notice because I was in the middle of a conversation with a colleague in the café.
I also didn’t notice when everyone around me went quiet. I carried on explaining the thing that I was talking about.
“Excuse me!” said a gentleman on a nearby table. “Two minutes silence!”
Today is 11th November.
I could feel my blood boil at the interruption to me. OK, so I was interrupting his wanting to observe a 2 minutes silence, but who was he to tell me what I had to observe or not! I was about to indignantly point this out.
“Please?” he said.
And that one word diffused everything.
Asking, not demanding, is a much better way to get what you want.
